'PADSTOW: 24 HOURS & CHANGE': A NEW POEM...

Padstow: 24 Hours & Change

It was busy like a holiday evening. Truly…
But no wind, warm for October.
Promenaders, their voluble children heard
And their dogs abounded, naturally…

Diners at tables,
Smokers outside,
Hounds leashed to disable,
Yet loosely tied.
Fish-nets dangled
Into the quay,
Small crabs entangled
But wrench to break free.
Harbour smells linger,
Strains heard on guitar;
Barking, a singer,
Guffaws from a bar…

It was quiet like it was past midnight. Really…
Still no wind, pleasant for October.
Deserted. The demanding children unheard
And their dogs grounded, pleasingly…

Restaurants silent,
Vapers dispersed,
Dogs merely redolent,
Removed, coerced.
Crabbing now finished
On harbour’s wall,
Hubbub diminished,
No catches at all.
The harbour smells savoured,
A breeze lifts from the sea,
Padstow has favoured
Its best time on me…

November 2016

Saturday 29th October, 8.15pm, when it really seemed to be the final evening of revelry in Padstow, before holiday-making families travelled home to begin the second half of the autumn school term.
Sunday 30th October, 8.15pm, for the clocks had been taken back an hour overnight.
Padstow was eerily quiet, bereft of its liveliness.
Few eating places were open at all.
It was like it was 1am…
