KIRSTY ELSON'S 2018 CALENDAR: THE SEPTEMBER IMAGE AND A NEW POEM...

September: Kirsty Elson’s Calendar Image…

Was it the expense involved in hiring the deckchairs
That has sent holidaymakers scurrying away?
Or are they guzzling their ice-creams, pasties, chips, or pizzas
Afresco ‘neath the awning to keep scavenging seagulls at bay?

Have the cottages taken on human expressions?
The pale one’s life-ring is now painted lips, gasping “Ooooh!”
The door is a nose, turned blue from years of Navy rum,
And the gull is a hair-slide near the roof’s chimney flue…

The cottages are surely wearing fun holiday sunglasses
But the larger home’s door lamp is surely a hooked nose?
A stern red mouth displays no apparent holiday cheer,
For it has sucked in its cheeks ’til blue in the face, I suppose…

And the flagpole is maybe an advert for Domino pizzas?
