Lydney Town v Abbey Rangers

This tie brings together two Step 5 teams from different leagues. Lydney Town from the Hellenic Premier League host Abbey Rangers from the Combined Counties League. It promises to be a keenly contested encounter at the Rec’ and coverage of the match may be found on Sunday at 




Founded in 1911, Lydney’s league form has been mixed this term, winning 2, drawing 2 and losing 1 of 5 games. They lie 9th in the league with 8 points and a goal difference of -1. 

A 2-3 victory at Longlevens was followed by a 2-2 draw at Brimscombe and Thrupp, then a 4-1 loss at Ascot United. A repeat 3-2 win v Longlevens at the Rec’ was followed up by a scoreless draw at home to Tuffley Rovers, during which Town ‘keeper Rich Thomas saved a penalty.

In the FA Cup, Town won 1-2 at AFC Hayes, before drawing 0-0 at Royal Wootton Bassett Town in the Preliminary Round and the replay is scheduled for next Tuesday, 4th September at the Rec’.

Abbey Rangers, formed in 1976 and named after the nearby Chertsey Abbey have begun this season strongly, despite a 0-4 reverse in the FA Cup at home to Newhaven. 

They lie top of the Combined Counties League with 4 wins and a draw from their 5 matches. Wins of 3-0, 4-1 and 3-0 against Redhill, Cobham and Guildford City respectively, all on their own patch at Addlestone Moor have been added to by a 0-2 success at Badshot Lea and a 1-1 draw at Southall. The team’s goal difference is +11 and the points total is 13…

This will be my first visit to Lydney, a 76 mile trip from Solihull and let’s hope that the tie is entertaining for spectators to witness and memorable for the players to take part in…
