Roman Lincoln: Seen Unseen
Gateway built by legionaries
Two thousand years ago
Is largely ignored,
Like a kestrel
Which hovers above a freeway
As prey is sought.
Water-well, dug by invaders
So long ago & fenced off,
Near an ancient herb garden, unnoticed
Like a sapling
Which struggles in a public park,
Its survival prejudiced.
Wall remnants cemented by Romans,
Once proud defences
Of a colonial settlement,
Undermined like an eyesore sculpture
Which spews from city hall's steps
Into a parking lot: a derelict battlement…

A few Roman remains in Lincoln, ignored as 21st Century life hurries by.
