The posture, the rather languid stance,
The chin-up and the rather superior expression,
Speak of late-Victorian Imperialism;
The rapture, the rather bushy moustache,
The glaring eyes and the rather haughty expression,
Speak of Empire and Colonialism;
The caricature, the rather stolid pride,
The left-foot forward and the rather aloof expression,
Speak of glory, sacrifice and militarism…

The superb Boer (South African) War memorial in Huddersfield was a pleasure to behold.
The headgear, ammunition belt, rifle and moustache make the featured soldier look rather like a US Army scout from around the same era.
Love the puttees round his trousers though…
