HINCKLEY AFC 5-0 INGLES FC: THE INDEPENDENT, HONEST, LIGHTHEARTED MATCH REPORT...

Lethal When Needed Hinckley Sink Ingles

Hinckley AFC 5-0 Ingles FC

The Mowdog’s thoughts…

I guess that you couldn’t criticise Ingles for their effort during the 90 minutes they endured at Barwell FC’s newly upgraded Kirkby Lane ground. They were simply beaten by a stronger, more resourceful and certainly more clinical team, despite the fact that a number of AFC’s chances went begging. Two late first period goals killed Ingles and both came from erroneous dribbles by dangerous AFC winger Isa Abraham. He lost possession twice, fortunately regained possession twice and twice colleagues subsequently found the brave Oscar Webb’s net.

Webb made decent saves from Hinckley’s Chris Camwell, from Abraham and later in the match from home replacement Jeremie Agholor but in truth Hinckley’s passing game, involving the impressive Dan Hoskins, the industrious Tyson Knight and the skipper, Uncle Tom Cobleigh Weale, dominated for much of the evening allowing Ingles only rare occasions when they managed to forge any kind of offense.

CAMWELL CHECKS FOR ANY MALFUNCTIONING EQUIPMENT...

Home ‘keeper Matt Hill actually made one fine first-half save from Layton Wheeler whose ball control needed to be watched closely by home left-back Mikkel Hirst. However, with three assists and a goal, Abraham will likely be pleased by his contribution although Hoskins really did perform in an eye-catching manner.

INGLES SHOWING SOME THIGH...

Despite the poorly lit sections of the playing area, namely along the touchlines, Kirkby Road certainly looked smart and the surface enabled footballers to display their skills without having to take ruts, mud, bobbling, or undulations into account as well as the expected physical attentions of opponents.

THE TOSS IS NIGH...

Dan Hoskins…

The returning playmaker was often inventive, passing with aplomb but his shooting threat was also a bonus for Hinckley. Following a scramble involving Charlie Evans he curled an effort past the right stick then from Abraham’s assist he thumped a shot from 25 yards which deflected off Ingles’ Billy Tebbatt onto the crossbar before Evans, fortunately for him having strayed offside, scrambled the rebound wide.

TOM COBLEIGH ATTEMPTS TO DETECT THE CHEMICALS USED IN THE WHITE LINES...

Hoskins then scored goal two, on the very stroke of half-time, when Abraham’s dribble was halted by Tebbatt but the ball rebounded off Abraham for Hoskins to secure possession. The midfielder moved forth and fired a splendid 24 yard drive high into the left side of the net.

After the break Hoskins continued in the same playing vein, firing two shots, one straight at Webb, the other flying wide off Ingles’ substitute Jordan McCourt who had replaced the injured Josh Rock, after the recess.

Oscar Webb…

Webb couldn’t really be faulted on the evening, bar a dropped Tom Cobleigh cross which Evans sliced awry but his best saves were from Camwell, Abraham and Agholor, as mentioned above. He dived low and right to push away a 26 yard free-kick by Camwell then low and left to keep out a shot from 18 yards by Abraham but the stop he made from Agholor was, er, unusual.

WEBB WOULD SAVE THE WIDECOMBE MAN'S FREE-KICK...

Late substitute Aghlor could not believe his ill luck after he had been assisted by both replacement Dom Alleyne and unsurprisingly, Abraham. The forward’s low drive from inside-right bounced up off Webb’s boot and dropped onto the roof of the net.

Chris Camwell…

He appeared to have taken a first period knock but although things did not really seem to go for him, he didn’t shirk his responsibilities. Webb gathered a low 25 yard attempt from the forward and Camwell, who was sin-binned at Kimberley on Saturday also curled a couple of efforts off target.

CAMWELL'S FREE-KICK WOULD BE SAVED BY WEBB...
WEBB & CAM? REALLY?

Isa Abraham…

Ingles right-back Luke Savage was severely tested by the winger in this match but actually gave as good as he got. The assist by Abraham for Hoskins to score was his second of the day, for he had also dribbled into trouble to cause goal one. That time, the ball also broke off the unfortunate Tebbatt’s challenge, ricocheted off Abraham and freed Evans centrally. The central striker was calmness personified as he coolly lifted his neat shot over the falling, advancing Webb and into goal.

ABRAHAM IS ABOUT TO TAKE HIS PENALTY...

...& SCORE...

A short left-wing corner routine in the second 45 was clipped right-booted towards the far pole by Abraham and Knight had no company as he nodded a simple goal from a few yards out.

Naturally Abraham assisted himself too, being the player fouled by Wheeler to win a late, late penalty for his team. Tom Cobleigh had set up the winger although the skipper might had driven in an angled shot himself but unselfishly he had assisted Abraham.

Abraham was given the chance to score a deserved goal and lashed the spot-kick high into the left side of the net.

Drew Kear…

Watching the lean, pacy right-back was like watching a greyhound being held on a leash by its owner. He wanted to attack. He scored the winner on Saturday at Kimberley and he netted against Ingles too when he picked up on a deflection of Hirst’s left-flank centre. He raced onto the ball with Alleyne in close attendance, beat McCourt, then Zanga Aboubacar Kone, before cutting a low left-footer past the despairing Webb into the bottom right corner of the net from 10 yards.

Kear liked to display his skills too although on one occasion Wheeler dragged him over by the shirt which the referee ignored, allowing visiting skipper Kyle Fowkes to move forward but slice a shot badly wide.

A fine run to the right byeline after the interval by Kear saw McCourt scramble the ball clear and the right-back’s angled volley later on cleared the crossbar…

The Ingles attack…

Not surprisingly there wasn’t much to report, bar the fine Wheeler effort which was clawed away from his right post by Hill, a low shot by Fowkes which was superbly blocked by Ben Vallance, another Wheeler drive which was also diverted by Vallance, a Billy Snaith volley which flew too high and a badly miscued try by Tebbatt.

SNAITH IS CAUTIONED...

All of those offensive moments came before half-time but after the players’ break for a pasty and a dram of cider, Fowkes’ low right-footer was stopped by Hill although maybe his left boot felt shunned on that occasion by the Ingles striker. Left-back Rhys Scargill (such a famous surname…) also shot well off target.

Snaith was actually cautioned for tumbling down Tom Cobleigh as he ventured over the half-way line en route to Widecombe Fair…

Ben Vallance…

Sent off at Kimberley, the calm, collected ex-Coventry United player often looked the most assured defender on show. Passing the ball out from the back was his forte, most of his passes were sensible ones, he made a few rushes forward, a few errors but also made important blocks. I mentioned to injured Hinckley striker Joel Heeley that Vallance would be an interesting inclusion in a midfield holding role if needed, for his control of the ball in possession and the ability to spot a cute pass could be most useful…

More Hinckley offense…

EVANS HAS FOUND AN ANCIENT ROMAN COIN...

Central defender Ben Whitehead who made one rescuing tackle for his team late on, also drove a shot over the target whilst Knight lifted a near post Camwell free-kick over the goal-frame. Webb saved an early low shot by Abraham and a late Tom Cobleigh free-kick from downtown was comfortably held by the Ingles’ gloveman.

The final words…

It was a pity that Rock failed to last more than a half, for he and Kone had battled well previously and Kone was quick on the ball for a central defender.

KONE & ROCK COVER EVANS...

So, after approaching Hinckley from the M69, I had driven along ‘Brookside’ where lights were flashing ahead. I reckoned on an accident, with ambulances, fire-engines and police vehicles. I was wrong. A house and garden were bedecked with flashing Christmas lights, sparkling deer and other monstrous creations… It was 9th November.

ALL DONE.
TIME FOR THE ROAD-WORKS...

En route home, my sat-nav chose the A47 but after 2 miles, the road was closed. Typical.

It’s not like that in Widecombe. Just ask Tom Cobleigh…
