THE POISED VAGNAS WASP SPIDER... (A POEM FROM VAGNAS IN THE ARDÈCHE DEPARTMENT OF FRANCE...)

 The Poised Vagnas Wasp Spider…

Its orb-web hung, barely visible,

A zig-zag stabilimentum, thick and white,

Threaded through the centre,

Like a ribbon shivering in the Ardèche breeze,

A pallid strip, seemingly implausible…

Its taut, striped legs clutched

A grasshopper, somewhat desiccated,

A mere shell, whilst the arachnid hung motionless,

The large, wasp-like torso sublime in the Ardèche breeze,

Its vicious bite poised to strike, if carelessly touched…
