REDWING: A NEW POEM...

Redwing

Twisting and thrashing, its pale pink legs
Strain and tense as the Redwing snatches
Berries from a tree adorned by snow;
Fussing and rushing, its striated cream breast
Thrusts and twists, as its beak’s lurid yellow
Like paint along its neck appears to flow;
Glancing and glowering, its signature crimson
Seeps and stains beneath wings like blood
Setting bare, thorny winter branches aglow…

December 2017

The Midland December snow brought a swarm of Redwings to my garden and also to homes in the Cotswolds’ Broadway…
Beautiful bird…

Its eyes reminded me of ancient Egyptian eye make-up to resemble the god Horus…
