Snug Mousehole: Anya Simmons’ Painting…
The brown stone and white facades
Of the village are crammed snug,
Like the middle stratum of five geological layers,
Colour-flecked by boards and canoes leaning
Against the slipway wall;
A blue vehicle hovers and a red door huddles
Beneath the clock-tower’s distinctive thrall…
The joy-blue sky with its wisps of white cloud
Reflect in the deeper hue of the harboured tide
Which oozes intrusively, redundant vessels to ensnare;
The sea-defence’s hewn rocks lie straining
And the sea-blue is scored by bare twigs, harsh like wire,
Angled to complement the masts and lines
Of the boats listing in the shallows and mire…
The vibrant green surrounding hillside
Protectively caresses assorted rooftops, weathered
By Mount’s Bay’s cruel winter gales and storms;
Patches of imported sand, flattened by tides turning
Provide walks for dogs and enhance the treasure
That is snug, protected, vintage Mousehole,
Once a fishing village, now a gem for leisure…
