The Fallen Apples & The Brown Hare…
The narrow lane ran downhill,
Strewn with dust, pebbles and sand
By tractors and their tyres
With industrial tread.
A passing place, a verge came into view,
Strewn with apples, fallen.
And there, agitated with raised head,
Caught in the act of eating its fill
Was a brown hare, in straits dire…
What should it do? Where should it run?
It careered one way then the other, in dread
As I continued to watch and thrill
At the black flashes upon long, erect ears and bobbing tail,
Then it found an escape through a hedge and hurriedly fled…

I had never seen such a creature before and oddly, at first, it looked like a small deer…
The car stopped and the hare was watched as it scavenged apples, then almost posed for photos, which I took through the windscreen.
It soon sought an escape and found it beneath a hedge…
Near Wighton, North Norfolk...
