'WAKE-UP CALL': A BADGER IN WARWICKSHIRE WITH AN ALARM CLOCK OF HONKING GEESE...

 Wake-up Call…

Like raindrops falling upon leaves,

A gentle tapping infused the silence

But there was no rain.

The autumnal dropping of seeds perhaps,

Or small stems as beech leaves dropped

From a breeze’s seasonal strain?

A small bird flitted low over the dimming

Ground, a female Blackbird perhaps,

Or a Dunnock scavenging.

The sett however lay still and forbidding

And daylight was fading quickly

For watching any prospective foraging…

Soon though, honking Geese flew overhead

And maybe that was a signal, an alarm clock

For a single badger to emerge.

It did. Immediately. And began to feed

Close to the sett, nervously assessing

The vicinity and the scattered food to purge…
