I'M RETURNING TO WELLINGBOROUGH TOWN ON FRIDAY 28TH JULY... So I'm remembering my last visit there in November 2010...

I WILL BE RETURNING TO WELLINGBOROUGH TOWN ON FRIDAY 28TH JULY AFTER A 13 YEAR ABSENCE.

THE LAST TIME I VISITED, ST NEOTS WON 1-3 THERE...

 Wellingborough Treads the Boards…

Stage-managed?

It looked staged,

As floodlights hung over

Freezing turf, glistening like upon a frosted, chocolate log.

Random shapes of lively mist then

Ducked and writhed low to the grass,

Dragging a shivering wind

Onto the bleak arena

And around the studded boots

Of footballers.

It was like theatrical smoke

Intruding from stage-left,

Clinging around the trodden boards

Of actors,

As footlights lurked below.

It seemed staged.

Stage-managed…

November 2010

Wellingborough v St Neots, 2010… Misty, cold and rather like wafting stage smoke, hiding the precious feet of actors…

Resilient Doughboys Make St Neots Earn Their Crusts…

St Neots were examined considerably by a plucky and confident Wellingborough outfit on a cold, breezy evening at the Dog and Duck, in front of a healthy crowd of 146 spectators.

Fuff led league leaders St Neots well and Webb bossed midfield but Tolley’s cleverness, not to mention his two goals, really scuppered the hosts’ hopes. Stefan Moore, languid at times, showed only flashes of his Aston Villa days, including his fourth minute equaliser of the Doughboys’ opening goal in the opening seconds.

Moore had skippered Villa’s youth team to an FA Youth Cup victory over Wayne Rooney’s Everton but what different careers those two would experience…

'Caught cold' would be an apt description of the visitors’ defending at the start but Tolley’s second goal on 69 minutes, settled the outcome, despite Wellingborough’s game efforts and St Neots’ labouring attempts to add to their lead.

Wellingborough really tested St Neots with their sheer effort but better finishing might have shocked their out-of-form guests. Tolley was good for St Neots though and Moore did what he had always done well, by finishing clinically from 15 yards or so.

Webb impressed me, as did Fuff, who was not particularly supported with confidence by the lanky Gent.

Turner was a knowledgeable performer and Power was in decent form for the hosts but an overworked defence managed, just about…

So St Neots won. It’s what they did then…
