Newlyn Daylight…
(Inspired by Percy Morton Teasdale’s painting…)
A working woman, likely used to being painted
By artists in and around Newlyn, tarries
Upon an uneven lane which meanders down
Towards the sea, perhaps to fill with herring the basket she carries…
The Mounts Bay sunlight deflects the mind from the vaunted
Fishing industry, the untidy quaysides, the grim
Alleys and the harsh conditions endured around the town,
So that the waterfront displays a promise, tidy and trim…
The pleasant pastel sky reflects lush mid-blue inside
The harbour, where a few luggers lie moored and unhindered,
Like inside a summertime marina and like in a postcard’s lure.
A shaft of sunlight gleams along the old quay wall, untended,
As Newlyn basks in daylight, weathered, yet somehow pacified.
Washing wafts and drifts in a gentle, comfortable breeze
And there is a rare and tangible, curious serenity pure,
A momentous sentiment about a community at ease…
