Sun On A House In Dieppe…
(From James Proudfoot’s painting, 1937…)
Slim diagonal shadows sprawl like restraints to secure the building,
Mimicking fragile, dislodged balustrades in the glorious sunlight,
Smearing the bright yellow stonework like staves
On a music sheet. And small windows peep shyly, like an afterthought,
As the dwelling dominates, rendering the premises below cold and dark.
The immense wall seems majestic in its natural gilding
Amongst a jumble of constructions, rough hewn and packed tight,
Whilst the sky-filled gap to the left, maybe an alley, craves
Investigation. A path down to Dieppe’s famous port
Perhaps? And above the cobbled streets the house basks in its radiance stark…
