The Lifeboat Is Taken Through The Dunes…
(From an 1883 painting by Michael Ancher, 1849-1927…)
There is a rehearsed and calm resolution,
As an open lifeboat is hauled by horses, harnessed
And guided across sand dunes, deep beneath fallen snow,
Towards a broiling ocean, flailing in its irritation.
A distant vessel flounders, by a storm’s ferocity harassed,
To which dutiful lifeboatmen will imminently row.
Wearing oilskin jackets, the men with solemn determination
Step forth, their lives at risk but their apprehensions repressed,
As one fellow bawls for more assistance as anxieties grow…
