PAIN, PITY & RESIGNATION... (My poem about the World War One memorial inside Brussels Cathedral...)

 Pain, Pity & Resignation…

(The World War One memorial in the Cathedral at Brussels…)

Drawn to the ghoulish white figures within a frame,

The trio of veiled women haunted

My interest and commanded my inquisition.

They represented pain, pity and resignation,

Three facets of war suffered by soldiers, undaunted

But taunted by fear, death and indecision…

La douleur to the right looks down in her pain,

La piété in the centre, stares her pity towards her God, whilst

La résignation, on the left, to the fates is resigned.

And servicemen once cowered, writhing in pain,

The slaughtered were pitied by comrades, sickened,

Wondering if their fates were already cruelly designed…
