THE TWO INFANTRYMEN OF BRUSSELS... (My new poem about a war memorial in Brussels, Belgium...)

 The Two Infantrymen Of Brussels…

They stand resolute. Arms folded like stubborn friends

Who have suffered a disagreement. Sullen, miserable.

They could be soccer players lining up for a team photograph,

Wanting to convey solidarity and a considerable

Meanness.

They stand together. Eyes closed to remember slain friends.

Rifles reversed out of respect and to mourn their considerable

Losses. They are joined too in a lasting epitaph

For the injured, the missing, the maimed and the unenviable

Stress.

The Belgian infantryman carries a flask and a trenching tool,

Surely symbols of his countryfolk’s generous support

Given to British prisoners and the injured from the dreadful conflict,

Which was so valiantly offered to those who courageously fought…

BRITISH SOLDIER, LEFT & BELGIAN SOLDIER, RIGHT...

Interesting Word War One memorial in Brussels.

The British Imperial War Graves Commission wanted and then commissioned the memorial to thank the Belgian people for their kindness to British prisoners of war…

The two, rather faded side reliefs show poor Belgian folks assisting injured British soldiers…
