THE DOGSBODY AT THE NOEL ARMS, CHIPPING CAMPDEN... (My poem about a brilliant dog at the hotel in Chipping Campden...)

The Dogsbody At The Noel Arms, Chipping Campden…

Mid-afternoon in the Noel Arms coffee space

Near the public bar, where a local guy,

A veteran, sits in the silent, obedient

Company of his small, unassuming pooch with its dark,

Pleading eyes and vacant, hangdog expression…

Soon, the owner rises with a determined face

And heads for the hotel’s toilets with a sigh

And his dog drops in behind, its devotion fervent,

Following shadow-like, regimental, its resolution stark,

Its languid faithfulness leaving a lasting impression…

3rd October 2025…

The dog is quite hilarious and it follows the owner, a metre of so behind, as if physically attached to him, yet seemingly totally ignored.

No lead is necessary.

I asked the guy about the pet some weeks back and he told me that it was a rescue dog, acquired four years ago.

When his daughter had asked how he was getting on with the dog, the chap had apparently replied,

“It stalks me…”

Loved that…
