'BLEAK': A NEW POEM ABOUT KIRSTY ELSON'S NEW 2019 CALENDAR... THE JANUARY IMAGE...

Bleak…
(from Kirsty Elson’s 2019 calendar, the January image…)

It’s like there’s a-wasting happening,
An overwhelming rusting,
A damp, icy feel
Around portals which appear to be boarded up,
Rather than being entrances, by untrusting
Residents, or maybe the cottages are now lets
By agents, whose remit is heritage to steal…

It’s like there’s abandonment,
For even rooftop snow is retreating;
A patchy, irksome feel
Shrouds windows which appear to be blacked out,
Rather than being lit, by heating
Fires, or maybe candles, or wood burning stoves,
For January has deleted the Yuletide appeal…

Or are occupants huddled within blankets wrapped,
Clutching water bottles, or rubbing their cold hands, chapped?
Lethal, slippery steps lead down to a frozen shore
But no boats lie there now, listing, or moored…

Such clever models…
