'ST IVES IN TRIANGLES': A NEW POEM ABOUT GEMMA PEARCE'S PAINTING...

St Ives In Triangles…
(from Gemma Pearce’s painting ‘Buttercups, St Ives…')

Foreground to distance,
Black and white form a scalene triangle
To the point of The Lighthouse
Upon a St Ives harbour wall…

Background to window,
Post, Godrevy and shell form an inverted triangle
To the width of a safe ledge
Within a St Ives dwelling wall…

And collecting and a safe harbour and warmth abide
And the buttercups splash yellow across the tide;
And bold stalks striate random lines of green
And the cow parsley imitates wave tops on the sea’s aqua, serene…

The black and white on the vase, the stone and lighthouse seem to add strength to the calm picture; …two triangles interweave somehow and the inverted one links a post, Godrevy lighthouse in the distance and the small shell on the window ledge…

Neat…
