Pézenas Memorial: An Interpretation…
A veteran of Verdun, or the Marne,
An infantryman
Renders an impression
Of being bewildered,
Lost inside a voluminous greatcoat,
Lost, like old comrades in the abattoirs
Of random butchery
Known as battlefields,
Tossed asunder at the cost
Of young men’s lives and mental scars…
Thus he stumbles unto death, tentatively,
Upon a twisted stick he leans unsteadily,
Helmet clutched to one hip, warily,
Flask and satchels out of mind, behind;
Dressing, or cowl tight, his grimace confined,
Eyes misted, troubled, stark but irretrievably resigned…
