Through The Gap: A Mousehole Sunrise…
(from Clare Bowen’s Mousehole Harbour painting…)
No winter baulks clasp
Mousehole’s harbour arms in defiance
Of winter’s rage,
Whilst an invasive burning sunrise
With its florid glint
Envelops an idling vessel’s hull
And a cold tide worries at tethered boats
Within the quay’s dank and granite walls…
Coastline hunches and gasps,
Its undulations dark in defiance
Of morning’s rage,
Whilst belching slate grey clouds rise,
Billow, writhe and hint
Of an impending storm to cull:
And the gaseous, fiery, flickering throat
Of flame threatens, yet with awe enthrals…
