Night Scene, Bottle Green…
(from a painting by Lynne Hickin)
Bottle green haze swirls about streetlights,
Hinting at damp, dank city smog,
As two hunched, huddled lovers
Lurch along in the gloom,
Barely breathing in the brume
Around distorted silhouetted
Buildings and unrecognisable sights,
Rendered unfamiliar by a downtown fog…
Sanctuary is sought and familiarity,
A small, cosy bar but intimate
For two muddled, befuddled lovers,
Searching on a smoggy night
For wine and romance and candlelight,
And a soft jazz mood, set in
The precious thrill of anonymity,
Their illicit romance to contemplate…
