GULL ROCK LABOURS... (My new poem about PORTREATH, CORNWALL. inspired by Georgie Harrison's painting...)

 Gull Rock Labours…

(Inspired by Georgie Harrison’s painting of Portreath…)

The Atlantic’s swell appears to slide, even glide

Across Portreath’s sandy beach, encircling,

Swirling its turquoise majesty, draping itself about

At odd angles as it deposits hidden weed and mermaid’s purses

Upon its furthest reach.

Gull Rock appears to be moored out at sea, petrified

And buoyant like a crude vessel, rankling,

A testimony to the ocean’s power and it offers no doubt

That it has been stranded and thus roars its curses

At the combers on the beach…

The movement of the painting is enticing.

When there in November, several mermaid’s purses (usually sharks’ or rays’ egg cases) were found amongst the weed brought in by huge waves and they were collected.

I have them still…
