Camel Bag…
It was like a wooden handbag
Suspended by stiffened string,
Threaded in antiquity,
A crude, dull, worn kind of thing.
Clappers were knotted on protruding ends
And around a camel’s neck it was hung,
So as the creature strode out into desert sand,
Percussion accompanied its expulsions of dung…

A visit to a souk.
This artefact was surely a handbag but on closer
inspection it was an object to be hung round a camel’s neck like a cowbell.
It hangs still, in the hallway of my home…
