CAMEL BAG... (My poem about an item bought in a Dubai souk, 2005...)

 Camel Bag…

It was like a wooden handbag

Suspended by stiffened string,

Threaded in antiquity,

A crude, dull, worn kind of thing.

Clappers were knotted on protruding ends

And around a camel’s neck it was hung,

So as the creature strode out into desert sand,

Percussion accompanied its expulsions of dung…

A visit to a souk.

This artefact was surely a handbag but on closer

inspection it was an object to be hung round a camel’s neck like a cowbell.

It hangs still, in the hallway of my home…
