A Weedy, Dry Evening & A Quartet Of Badgers…
It was mid-evening, an amber sunlight
Lit surrounding fields but the enclosed copse lay
Shaded by foliage hanging thick and green
From tall trees,
Whilst the ground was packed hard, harsh, dry and unforgiving.
Nettles grew spindly, tall and contrite,
Reaching and shivering in a breezy display
Above smaller, cowering weeds, providing a screen,
Like a tease,
Hiding setts and emerging badgers in their dusk-time foraging…
Soon though, heads became visible from holes partly hidden
And a quartet of badgers hauled their torsos free,
Snuffling and shuffling
Through the dirt and the dust
In a hurried feeding lust,
Grunting and grumbling
Amongst the shadows of bush and tree,
Lured out by hunger and by scattered food bidden…
