PEERING FROM WINDOWS... (My new poem about Sand Martin chicks at Dollar Cove, Cornwall...)

 Peering From Windows…

Holes in sandy cliff faces looked dark inside,

For dull weather had begun to envelop the cove

And adult birds with sustenance were awaited

By unseen chicks, hiding in the gloom.

When bright sunlight soon shone, several youngsters were spied,

Jostling for position, watching with heads tending to rove

Up and down, side to side, almost unabated,

Like snooping upon their neighbours from their own room.

It was like erstwhile neighbours in a close-knit community

Gossiping from terrace windows, given the opportunity;

The hairnets and full flowery aprons of hardworking housewives,

Leaning out discussing the intricacies of their harsh, insular lives…

Sand martin chicks, heads leaning out of their holes on a cliff-face, making me think of gossiping folks chatting from their open upstairs windows in days past…
