HAYLE SHUNNED... (My new poem about a quiet wildlife afternoon at Hayle, Cornwall...)

 Hayle Shunned…

It was merely a quick stop en route to Mousehole, Cornwall,

An interlude, a check for wildlife along the River Hayle,

Its estuary such a lure for waders and seabirds. Yet,

Looking out from a hide across a shallow lake,

Just a resting shelduck and a foraging egret were visible…

Near the estuary, no herons stalked the reeds at all

And the vast expanse of low-tide sand and mud failed

To feature any waders poking beaks into and striding upon the wet-

Lands there. Flocks of gulls and crows scavenging and on the take

Dominated, whilst a few shelducks lurked, their colours unmissable…

14th June 2025…

A strange visit.

There was some birdsong but so little birdlife was there to be seen.

Swallows have nested in the hide before now but there was nothing to be seen on the day.

Even the white board in the hide was blank, no birds spotted had been registered upon it at all…
