AFTERMATH... (My new poem inspired by Michelle Underwood's painting...)

 Aftermath…

(Inspired by Michelle Underwood’s painting…)

It was in my face and unnerving. A barren impression

Of a joyless late December, where pallid moonlight

Fights for clarity in a cloudy sky of hungover depression.

Mere silhouettes of trees, their trunks blackened by night,

Seemingly link branches to terrify, unsettle, induce fear

And intimidate with their violent tentacles, all foliage stripped.

Drawn into the nightmare, where drab and uncomfortable change is clear,

I sought solace within the turmoil, lured and emotionally gripped…

Pete Ray…

9th January 2026…

Seeing this painting, I was reminded of the copse in Warwickshire, where I have badger-watched for a few years and how it changes there in late December…

The artist has written that it was painted with the days after Christmas but before New Year in mind…

Love it.
