SELF PORTRAIT FREEZING... (My new poem about Peter Brook's painting...)

 Self Portrait Freezing…

(Inspired by Peter Brook’s painting…)

There is such height, an intake of breath, a soulless solitary coldness.

There is a deserted neighbourhood withstanding a wintry snow.

And he loiters, blending into the terrace, a small vertical amongst

A scene of verticals, a lone soul reflecting himself in a townscape of sharp lines and tracks.

There are the steep lane, the distant misty hills and a harsh boldness,

As wall grime and black windows are pitted against the white glow.

Chimneys, poised and erect pierce a wan peach sky with a curious angst

And the gaze becomes lured into the world of moorland dwellings and back-to-backs…

Pete Ray…

25th January 2026…

The painting was described as a self portrait and the artist can be seen on the street…

The history, the legacy and the beauty are all there for me.

I’m glad the artist was also called Peter…
