Lazise Monument
Just as cities had been bombed, then tumbled
To rubble, the infantryman’s life too had crumbled
To little more than despair;
Devoid of weaponry, his expression
Displays shock, dismay and depression,
Vacancy, helplessness and repression
And his ill-fitting uniform
Speaks of a gaunt spook of a soldier
Grasping at some redemption from his God, although forsaken…
And yet any angelic salvation
Is willingly, blankly taken,
For his youthful hopes have been crushed and crumpled,
For through the rubble of war his boots have stumbled…
