CHURCH SNOW: A NEW POEM RELATED TO KIRSTY ELSON'S DECEMBER CALENDAR IMAGE...

Church Snow…

(Kirsty Elson’s December Calendar Image…)

Snowflakes blotch a December night,
Colourless grasses stiffen like besom brooms;
Red post-box wears a snow beret,
 Yet darkness infiltrates cottage rooms…

A skiff lies frozen inside the quay,
A forbidding church door shuts out a storm;
The clock’s cogs wear snow like thick white paint,
Whilst the box-pews struggle to keep folks warm…

Harsh nails form the church tower’s crenellations,
To the simple wooden cross they defer;
Shivering villagers sing carols with seasonal gusto,
Yet a roaring coal fire, they’d likely prefer…
