Discarded Kit…
(Leamington’s WW1 memorial)
A single dropping has fallen disrespectfully
Upon a bare-headed infantryman,
Like blood from a wound, encrusted and dried:
And he reflects, dutifully
Upon the fate of his countrymen,
Maimed, disabled, disturbed, or died…
Three symbols of his war remain:
A clutched rifle, ruefully upturned,
A helmet and a gas-mask discarded with disdain,
Yet there is little evidence of glory, truly earned…
