Shoes Make The Warhorse
(Pershore’s WW1 Memorial…)
There is a grim expression
Upon the pinched face
And within the cavalryman’s eyes,
A lean, rather sinewy fellow with no trace
Of pride in a betrayal of depression,
For the horrors of battle his star belies…
There is a sad impression
Upon the sculpted face
And about the warhorse’s metal frame,
A lean beast, emaciated, showing no trace
Of pride in its suffering and repression,
Now rendered unfit for duty and cruelly lame…

Perhaps one of the horses taken from a farming background to serve during World War 1.
A harrowing existence for most, as it was for many soldiers.
This memorial’s horse has been cleverly made from horseshoes, one of which is from the war itself…
