'SHOES MAKE THE WARHORSE': PERSHORE'S MEMORIAL...

 Shoes Make The Warhorse

(Pershore’s WW1 Memorial…)

There is a grim expression

Upon the pinched face

And within the cavalryman’s eyes,

A lean, rather sinewy fellow with no trace

Of pride in a betrayal of depression,

For the horrors of battle his star belies…

There is a sad impression

Upon the sculpted face

And about the warhorse’s metal frame,

A lean beast, emaciated, showing no trace

Of pride in its suffering and repression,

Now rendered unfit for duty and cruelly lame…

Perhaps one of the horses taken from a farming background to serve during World War 1.

A harrowing existence for most, as it was for many soldiers.

This memorial’s horse has been cleverly made from horseshoes, one of which is from the war itself…
