Wing-Nut Humpback Whale…
(based on Kirsty Elson’s March image from her 2020 calendar…)
Could that be a wry smile
Beneath a drowsy eye,
As fins hang, lethargic,
Astray?
The whale loiters, cathartic,
Yet its carcass, its wooden grain
Belies its torpor, hinting instead
Of speed and sinuous style
And its wing nut tail fin seems poised
Like a rudder, erect and awry,
Rendering the predator anarchic
And a violent oppressor to any doomed
Prey…
