CORNWALL, DAY 8: 1Oth JULY 2020... (WIDEMOUTH BAY...)

Friday 10th July:

The final day…

Better weather, although a breeze accompanied sunshine and clouds when I made my customary walk into the village to acquire a newspaper…

Again, a chap allowed his dog to race onto the beach, despite those signs discouraging the activity. He joined his pet and encouraged it to rampage. I was irritated by this.

Packed the car and left the caravan site by 10am, driving the A30 and the A39 (the Atlantic Highway) to Widemouth Bay, near Bude. £5 to park for the day… Hmm… However, there was plenty of room on the huge beach, despite the fact that diggers were at work near the Black Rock Cafe and one family was sitting in front of one of the vehicles, which was comical (though hardly scenic), for there was so much space elsewhere…

THE MODERN WAY TO GET YOUR SANDCASTLES BUILT...
OR IS SOMEONE ABOUT TO BE REMOVED?

The wind lacked warmth but didn’t lack chill and hoodies were worn whilst chobbling a packed lunch. At least the beach chairs were used… A walk along the beach, tiptoeing past small, stranded jellyfish followed but unless one was fortunate to find a sheltered spot next to a section of the leaning, eroding low cliffs, it really wasn’t pleasant sitting for too long.

There were countless dogs on the beach though, seemingly everywhere one looked. Some were leashed, many were roaming about, some were investigating other folks’ belongings and one was drinking from another dog’s water bowl, sending the leashed bowl-owner into a barking fit. Some dogs chased skimmers, sticks or balls, but there were dogs which shitted too and one small mutt peed against the lifeguards’ windbreak… The children of dog families largely did their own things, as parents made sure their pets had a good beach holiday…

However, watching the sand martins swooping into their nest holes above where dogs and their people were sitting was brilliant…

Superbly clean loos at the Black Rock Cafe though…

We left at around 1.45pm and drove back to Solihull…
