The Weathered Cottages & The Old Boat

Nestling on a setting of a south coast beach,

Weathered cottages lean awry,

Their upper windows bleary

Like eyes tired from red wine;

Roofs sit askew like old hats now weary

Of gales and the stormy ocean’s reach…

Sparkling white like the sun on coastal sand,

The grainy wooden quay marks time,

Its surface linear and parched 

And like the sea, it curls into a wave;

The tired vessel on ocean’s swell has arched,

Its bow rising, seeking solace from the land…

To me this piece of artwork is quirky but nostalgic and beautifully sad. 

Even the boat’s mast has warped with the passing of time, somehow marked by the rings on the driftwood…

The scene is really thought provoking about the loss of a way of life I never knew…
