Sphinx, Cairo…
Carved for the Pharaoh’s
Delight, to be sure:
A monument,
A sediment,
A barque in Eternity,
Hefted from stone.
Contrived for the Pharaoh’s
Journey to the Netherworld:
A fossil,
A vessel,
A boat to Eternity,
Crafted from stone.
Concocted for the Pharaoh’s
Goods to be stored:
A hoard,
Aboard,
A vault for Eternity,
Sculpted from stone.
The figurehead rose
From lion-hulk
To Pharaoh’s classical features
And emerged from the desert
Like a sunken ship,
Prised from a sea-bed’s creatures…
