Languid Predator
(A rock formation in Mousehole, Cornwall…)
The predator squats, stony and sleek,
Expression regal, repellant, ravenous;
Skin shining in pallid sculptured sunlight,
Its countenance obsequious to Mount’s Bay;
The lizard crouches, glossy and meek,
Impression frugal, insolent, venomous;
Death lurking in vapid, enraptured might,
Its permanence ostentatious in Mount’s Bay…

Odd-shaped rock in Mousehole, Cornwall, which looked to have the features of a predatory lizard…
