Mud drags at sodden boots, astride,
As the infantryman, grim faced,
Prepares to hurl a Mills bomb
Towards the Boche, his rifle shouldered,
The bayonet fixed offensively.
And Death brags of eternity for those who have died…
Slime drags at stinking boots, astride,
As the Cornishman, pinch-faced,
Stares at the contemptible Somme
Towards the Hun and corpses mouldered.
His gas respirator hangs defensively
And Hell brags its obscenity for those who have died…
