Detect & Detect Not…
There were extended necks and moments of pause
When something alerted one or two members of the clan,
Both behind and in front of my immobile silence,
Upon a warm, if thankfully breezy June evening.
Scrabbling from several holes, badgers’ jaws
Scavenged the victuals provided, despite the disturbance of one passing van.
Seven badgers found an occasional chunk of roast chicken, its essence
Hastily sniffed at and then gobbled up with a voracity rather entertaining…
The truth of whether those extended necks and moments of pause
Meant a human presence had been detected
Or not, was unproved, as the feeding frenzy endured.
Then suddenly a loud vehicle roared by on the lane to cause
A group freeze, whilst stares of fear were clearly reflected
In dark eyes, before safety in setts was rapidly secured…

Temple Balsall, 26th June 2023…
Seven badgers quickly appeared to feast upon the food provided.
Eager foraging meant that despite a few glares my way and the noise of one passing van on the lane, the clan members fed on.
Finally though, a loud vehicle drove past the copse and scattered the badgers, allowing me to leave unnoticed…
