The Early Visit & The Looks…
A late afternoon sun broke through the dappled scene
Of the woodland, daubing cream spillages upon the baking
Earth and across the base of the aged tree which marked a sett.
A couple of badgers did appear, despite their takeaway arriving early,
One of which fed dubiously with an expression wily and surly,
Almost bear-like and sullen. It cast uncomfortable stares my way, yet
No other brocks in the heat seemed keen on waking
And the pair rushed away when a single squirrel shifted unseen…

A few vehicles disturbed the badgers on a few occasions but the sound of a bicycle terrified them.
A squirrel, scuffling high in a tree worried one of the badgers into a fast exit from the copse, whilst insects rose and fell in the shards of late afternoon sunlight, as if on strings…
