The Biplane Lands In Penberth…
(A Golden Ringed Dragonfly, Penberth, Cornwall…)
One patrolled along a narrow stretch of Penberth’s stream,
Fast running and which dodged towards the Cove.
I lingered upon a stepping-stone where the sun’s reflective gleam
Upon cold water sparkled and lit the dragonfly as its route it wove…
It made short, shuttling flights hither and thither, predating
But it was indifferent to settling anywhere near.
Yet I was soon rewarded further upstream, delighting
In its pose, like an idling biplane with its landing gear…

25th June 2023…
One of these dragonflies flashed along the stream which flowed into Penberth Cove but typically, it wouldn’t land and pose for a photo…
However, further up the rushing stream one surprisingly landed near me and I was able to capture its beauty.
The Golden Ringed Dragonfly has green eyes and is a predator of other dragonflies, plus damselflies, insects, wasps, beetles and bumble bees.
It is fast and agile, whilst the female is the longest British dragonfly…
The larvae can remain at the bottom of streams for up to five years before emerging as dragonflies…
