Snack On The Rock…
(A kestrel feeds on rodent prey in Mousehole, Cornwall…)
It seared across the shoreline path and alighted
Upon a boulder, close to the ocean.
The kestrel quickly began to devour its heavy prey,
A meaty rodent, which flinched and writhed
But was then clinically ripped apart by the aware
Predator’s hooked bill, beneath its daring, piercing eyes.
It ravaged its find upon the rock as I tarried, unsighted
And ripped bloody flesh with vicious motion,
Its harsh claws clamped upon a torso torn awry,
The scene in bright morning sunlight bathed.
I could do little but in fascination gape and stare,
Beneath the occasional herring gull’s flight and cries…

Mousehole’s seafront in Cornwall…
The kestrel flew with its heavy prey to land close by upon a boulder and I was treated to a fascinating insight into a predator’s lifestyle…
