SCULPTURE ON THE BEACH... (My new poem about a rock formation on Broad Haven beach, Pembrokeshire. But who did it remind me of..?)

 Sculpture On The Beach…

(Broad Haven, Pembrokeshire…)

Someone referred to the rock formation rather politely

As ‘the lion’ and thus I took another look at it, realising

At once though that the ancient layers had been sculpted into a vaguely human head.

In the creases I saw a belligerent frown, the head thrown back slightly

In a gesture of conceit, its mouth pouting and puckered, appraising

With a sulking, childish, ‘Go on, tell me I’m wrong…’ Though the words remained unsaid.

It was the kind of expression daring his audience to disagree, even slightly

And the hewn hair seemed matted like stiff, blond pretzel-icing,

Whilst the whole creative protuberance portrayed a comic character, manufacturing dread…

Strange that I can’t just put my finger on exactly who it was that the rock formation reminded me of…
