SEALED IN, NEWLYN... (My poem about the old harbour wall in Newlyn, Cornwall...)

 Sealed In, Newlyn…

A misted winter sunlight

Barely featured St Michael’s Mount

Between Newlyn’s protective arms,

From my vantage point,

On a disused harbour elbow,

The dereliction and overgrowth its charms.

The grassed stone promontory

Rarely used for mooring

Near Newlyn’s landing stages,

From my vantage point

An historic monument,

Its pride now weathered through the ages.

One surprised seal gaped

Hardly in its habitat

In Newlyn harbour’s swell;

From my vantage point

A fascinating appearance,

Such casualness casting a mesmerising spell…

A random seal poked its head out of the water in Newlyn harbour as I explored the sea-wall I had long admired.

Finally, in December 2006 I was able to walk the length of it, unexpectedly.

It had featured on my favourite Walter Langley

painting,

‘Never Morning Wore To Evening But Some Heart Did Break’…
