CONGREGATIONS HAVE CHANGED: ST MERRYN, CORNWALL... A NEW POEM...

Congregations Have Changed

An inn sign gleams
In a trio of lights,
Welcoming travellers with a promise
Of choice food and ales,
A place to accommodate the dog
At one’s leisure
And join a congregation in the pursuit of pleasure…

A church tower looms
In the autumn night,
Hospitality not its major premise;
A sanctuary which ails,
A place to search out a God
For one’s salvation,
Spartan and unfashionable for a dwindling congregation…

St Merryn’s dull, closed church tower was visible behind the inn sign for Rick Stein’s lit up Cornish Arms inn.

Just made me think…
