HIDING IN THE BACKGROUND: A NEW POEM...

Hiding In the Background

The dew’s sheen barely touched
The dull grass, its sombre hue
Respectful of the monuments and gravestones
Cluttering busy Shirley’s urban churchyard
On a cold autumn morning,
Beneath a sky of luscious blue,
Their masonry either unique but more usually clones…

The painted memorial recently retouched,
Its white cross reminding us of who
Gave their lives during two vile world wars;
Yet almost hiding, the urban church tower
Paled in weak sunlight’s dawning
Because death, for those pitiable troops
Scorned prayers and deprecated duty and cause…

Early morning, Thursday, October 27th 2017.

Shirley’s Parish Church almost seems to hide from the glory of the war dead.

The scene appears to say that nothing the church could have done would ever have prevented the slaughter…

And it didn’t.
