Rushden & Higham Blown From the Vase By Storm Brian

It was perfectly clear

When Brian huffed then puffed

In an attempt to blow down

The home of the Lankies,

Rushden and Higham United,

That despite the wind’s great gusts

And its goalmouth to goalmouth thrusts,

He found that his robust

Offensive gales, although excited,

Were constantly rebuffed…

Conifers were bent taut, like rows

Of medieval archers’ bows;

 A corner-flag hunched close to the ground,

Fencing rattled and slapped and creaked,

As grandstand seats flapped down harshly then rose…

The football was either rapidly propelled,

Or into the face of the storm it hovered, held,

Lifting, floating then gently dropping

Like slow-motion giant redwoods

Agonisingly and deliberately by lumberjacks felled… 

It became perfectly clear

When the ‘Gate blew in,

In an attempt to break down

The resolve of the Lankies-

Rushden and Higham United-

That despite their physical bluster,

The Brummies struggled to muster

Real dominance, lacking lustre;

Yet victory was decisive,

Via Storm Brian’s loud din…
