FA Vase Preview:
Saffron Dynamo v Bottesford Town
This will be my first visit to the home of Saffron Dynamo at Kings Park, Cosby, Leicestershire. The match brings together teams from the Leicestershire Senior League and the North East Counties League and both are experiencing decent seasons thus far.
Dynamo have played just 5 league games, winning 3 and drawing 1, claiming 10 points and having achieved a goal difference of +6. Recently in the league, after winning 1-3 at Hathern, they lost 3-2 at Cottesmore Amateurs but then won 2-4 at Friar Lane and Epworth. They currently lie 6th in the league table.
In the FA Vase, impressive wins were gained over Haughmond from the West Midlands Regional Premier League and then Heath Hayes from the Midland League Division 1. The 2-4 victory at Haughmond included a brace by Zak Woolman and one goal each by Jamie Starbuck and Phil Howard.
PHIL HOWARD: 8 GOALS THIS SEASON OVERALL... |
A 4-0 success at home v Heath Hayes in the next round saw Starbuck, Howard, Pearce Fox and Brad Essex on the scoresheet, so the team hasn’t been short of goals in its two ties so far.
JAMIE STARBUCK: SCORED IN BOTH ROUNDS OF THE FA VASE THIS TERM... |
Leading overall scorer for Saffron is currently Howard with 8, followed by Starbuck with 6 and Woolman, who has netted 5.
Their manager, Kelvin Granger commented about the upcoming tie:
KGB: KELVIN GRANGER, BOSS OF SAFFRON BUT NOT RUSSIAN AT ALL... |
“The pitch is looking great considering the situation last season. I’ve not much to say really but it’s the first time in the club’s history we have made it past the First Qualifying Round, let alone being in the First Round proper. We will be enjoying the day and trying to upset the opposition, with us being the underdogs. We’ve nothing to lose either way…”
Bottesford lie 7th in the NCEL with 5 wins and 2 draws from 9 matches, with a goal difference of +6, the same as Saffron’s. Their points total is 17 at present but they have lost, won and drawn their last three league games.
POACHER STEPHEN McCARRON: POINTING TEACHER... |
A 2-1 loss at Athersley Recreation was followed by a 2-0 home victory v Eccleshill United and on Tuesday they roared into a 0-3 lead at Hemsworth Miners Welfare by the 43rd minute, only to be pegged back by their hosts to 3-3. Goalscorers there were Henry Cook, Jack McMenemy and Wayne Graves.
11 GOAL JACK McMENEMY... |
In the Vase, a 1-1 draw at Midland League Division 1 outfit Leicester Road, courtesy of Craig Bridge’s penalty, was followed up by a 2-1 replay win at home, with goals by McMenemy and Lewis Bemrose. Next up were Central Midlands League outfit Pinxton and again a 1-1 draw on the road (the goal netted by Cook) was followed up by a replay win back at Birkdale Park, this time 3-0 and the goalscorers were Lee Ridley, who nabbed 2 and Jack Cross.
LEWIS BEMROSE: SCORED IN THE REPLAY WIN v LEICESTER ROAD... |
The leading overall scorer for the Poachers so far this term is McMenemy with 11.
LEE RIDLEY: A BRACE v PINXTON IN THE VASE REPLAY... |
